LBS Beauty: Rihanna's Red Carpet Look at the Grammy's

Pop songstress and style icon Rihanna was arguably one of the best-dressed on the red carpet at this year’s Grammy Awards. She showed up rocking a long goddess-like red gown, and a complimentary beauty look that made heads turn. Instead of her edgy rocker cut, she sported long, wavy locks, paired with a bold red lip, red nails, and a sultry cat eye.

There were so many beautiful elements to her look. With a little effort and the proper technique, you can pull this look off at home using the following tips:

The Flawless Face

The key to achieving a flawless, blemish-free face like Rihanna’s is to take time correcting for any redness, covering up blotchiness, and evening out the complexion. Start with a great concealer that’s just a shade or two lighter than your complexion. Work the concealer in the under-eye area to get rid of dark circles and to even out fine lines, and use it to spot-correct blemishes. Next, apply a primer to the face. Primer helps not only keep your makeup in place, but negates shine so you have a matte finish. Finally, smooth on the foundation of your choice, making sure it’s evenly spread across the face. For a little highlight and a sun-kissed look, dust a golden bronzer on the cheeks. Finish with a powder to set!

The Cat Eye

There are quite a few ways to achieve the cat's eye look. Advanced makeup users may spring for a liquid liner to get the look. If you’re a novice like myself, spring for either a cream shadow in black that you can apply with an eye brush, or an eye pencil in black. Using a cream shadow with a brush allows you more control (and less mistakes!) because you can smooth it on gradually, as opposed to using liquid, which only gives you one swoop to get it right. Start at the inner corner of the eye, bring the liner all the way across the lid, then bring it up into a wing at the crease of the eye. Do this for both the top and the bottom for a sultry, picture-perfect cat's eye look. Finish the eye look with a neutral shadow with a little shimmer on the lids.

The Matte Red Lip

You guys know I’m all about a red lip! Celebrity makeup artist Mylah Morales, who did Rihanna’s makeup for the red carpet, used a combination of two lipsticks and a liner to achieve this look. Rihanna’s red lip is a matte red with a hint of orange.
The key to getting the perfect red lip? Start with a matching liner! Red is such a bright color on any complexion, and you need to start with a liner if you want the color to stay in place. Next, choose your favorite bright red or a combination of two similar colors, like Rihanna did. You can either use a lipstick that goes on matte, or use one that doesn’t and lightly dust it with powder for a matte effect.

The Glossy Red Nails

Red nails are a classic, and so easy to achieve. The key to getting nails like Rihanna, sans a fancy manicurist, is to choose a lacquer with great color payoff. This means that what you see in the bottle is what you get on your nails. Spring for a color that’s fairly opaque and bright. Don’t forget to start with a base coat and finish with a top coat to seal in the color.

The Romantic Waves

Rihanna’s new ‘do was the talk of the town after the Grammys. Instead of going with her edgy cropped look, she sprung for long romantic waves. To achieve this look start with a center part that’s just slightly off-center. If you have thick or curly hair, you;ll want to make sure your hair is sleek to start, so either blow-dry or flat-iron the hair for optimal sleekness. Prep the hair with a heat protectant product and a holding spray of your choice. In workable sections, curl the hair around a 1 1/2 inch barrel iron or a curling wand. Finish the look with a shine serum and a final blast of hairspray so your curls stay in place.

There you have the steps to Rihanna's red-carpet ready hair and makeup. Would you try this look at home?

LIVE 2013 Grammy's Red Carpet Fashion

This year, we watched the 2013 Grammy Awards red carpet live and soaked up all the fashion and beauty moments as they came across our screens. You guys tweeted us @LoveBrownSugar, followed our updates on Facebook, and checked the site for updates on our favorite looks as we saw them. So here's a red carpet review of the looks:

Estelle looks stunning in a crop top and mermaid skirt, of her own design. Love this print! She looks amazing and that body is snatched.

She's giving a smokey eye moment, and a neutral lip. LOVE! She's also wearing Royal Asscher jewelry - the Gold & Floating Diamond Pendant and the GOld & ceramic floating diamonds ring.

Ashanti is rocking a black & floral keyhole dress with sheer bottom. Not sure how I feel about this one - thoughts?

Ashanti also went with a smokey eye moment.

Chris Brown in all-white-everything.

Taylor Swift wearing a beautiful J.Mendel gown. I love the structure and detailing on this dress. She went with a milkmaid braid and smokey eye to finish out the look.

Wiz Khalifa rocking a Tom Ford suite and a very preggers Amber Rose in a Donna Karan gown. She looks like she's about to pop!

Adele is wearing a red patterned dress with floral detailing. She's wearing matching shoes. It's rather buttoned up, I might have liked to see her in something a little more revealing up top. It just feels like ALOT of fabric. What do you think?

Jennifer Lopez slays the red carpet yet again in an Anthony Vaccarelo gown with a thigh-high split, and Tom Ford shoes. Daring! And I love her sleek top knot, it's the perfect compliment.

Rihanna looked stunning in all-red-everything on the red carpet. She wore an Alaia gown, and completed her looks with a red lip, a subtle smokey eye and vampy red nails. For hair, she rocked soft, romantic waves with honey blonde highlights.

Katy Perry showed a fun, yet sophisticated look in a seafoam green Gucci Resort 2013 gown with keyhole and beaded detailing. I love her long, voluminous flowing locks.

Beyonce showed up to the 2013 Grammy's in a black & white Osmand Yousef Zada pant suit look. She rocked a bold red lip,  jeweled cuffs, and peeptoe stilettos to accessorize.

Kelly Rowland showed a little skin (and her amazing body) in a Georges Chakra gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Janelle Monae went with her classic tuxedo look. She rocked a red lip and red nails courtesy Covergirl, for which she's a spokesperson.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats showed up elegantly clad - Alicia in a cutout dress with leather detailing. And Swizz wore a classic gray suit.

Last but not least, Solange wore a green Ralph & Russo couture gown. She accessorized with neon peach pumps and an oversized 'fro.

Thoughts on the red carpet? Who do you think killed it?

J.Lo and Sasha Fierce Post-Grammy's

This has to be one of my favorite post-grammy pics of the night. Sasha is truly fierce in her studded minidress and edgy accessories. And J.Lo shows us how to do "nude" right in this structured piece with metallic detail. Love it! Fierce or Foolish?

52nd Annual Grammy Awards: Fashion Countdown

In case you missed out on the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards last night, it was definitely a show to remember. LoveBrownSugar's twitter was on fire last night with commentary and debate over the star's Red Carpet looks. There were some we loved and others we hated. Here's the LoveBrownSugar Grammy Awards Fashion Countdown:

10. Best - Beyonce

Although I wasn't a fan of her nude Stephane Rolland red carpet look to the right, she redeemed herself during her Grammy acceptance speech with this deep-V metallic number. I know Queen Bey is curvy and all, but I'm not a fan of playing up those curves with that overly-structured silhouette. The fabric doesn't do it for me, nor does the light color against her fair skin and light hair. Agreed?

9. Worst - Snooki?

You guys might be wondering why I placed a question mark next to her name? Well, that's because I have no idea how she got invited. All I need to do is fake tan, get a reality show, some fake extensions and learn how to fist pump to get a Grammy invite?? I'll pass...

8. Best - Lady Gaga
As outlandish as Queen Gaga can be, somehow we all understand her. She's outlandish, fanatical, freakish and foolish to some. But above all, she's creative genius. By the way, her opening performance with Elton John was EPIC! Clap it up for Gaga...

7. Worst - The Situation?

Same rules apply here as for Snooki....WTF is he doing at the Grammy's? Let's forget about the fact that his nickname is "The Situation" and focus on the fact that he took his shirt off on the red carpet. Gotta love the Jersey Shore crew...

6. Best - Miley Cyrus

Although I'm not a huge fan of the teen star, I loved her Red Carpet look for the Grammys. Her minidress was chic, fitted and youn. I thought it suited her well and was age-appropriate. Showling a little leg, but not too much skin. Thumbs up, Miley...

5. Worst - Ne-Yo

So Ne-Yo's placement on my "worst" list has nothing to do with his outfit, but everything to do with the fact that he thought it was cute to bring two dates? Whaaa? I'm also not a huge fan of Jessica White's dress (on the right). Oh, Ne-Yo...it's ok, we know you're gay smh.

4. Best - Jennifer Hudson

Despite the fact that the sister can blow, she just had a baby boy and she looks absolutely gorge! She's trim, in shape and absolutely divine in all black everything. Her stylists really stepped up their game this time around, because we've seen J.Hud looking sub-par on previous occasions. Kudos, many kudos!

3. Worst - Katy Perry
This light golden color and the dark hair just don't match on this one Katy. The color completely washes her out. And she looks like a mermaid...not in a good way. Better luck next time!

2. Best - Keri Hilson
Keri looks like a dream in this gown. I love the fitted shape on her and how it elongates her already-long shape. The whole look (beauty, dress and jewels) is giving me Old Hollywood glam and I'm loving it!

1. Worst - Ciara
I'm sorry Ciara. I know you just got back from the Haute Couture shows in Paris and you must've been inspired, but this Givenchy is NOT doing it for me. Are those loose lace pants you're wearing? You need to 1,2 Step with all that...
