VIDEO: Motown The Musical Coming To Broadway

So you guys know how much I STAN for the Motown era, right? I'm always down for a throwback moment and my taste in clothing is normally a mix of modern trends and retro 60's or 70's pieces. I'm also a die-hard Diana Ross fan (hence my obsession with her delightful spawn Tracee Ellis Ross).

The entire Motown era fascinates me beyond belief.  Movies like Dreamgirls, The Jackson Five and Sparkle? I live for them.  For those of you like me, I've got news that will make you dance (like bands)...

Motown The Musical is coming to life in early 2013! They will be kicking off the show on Broadway in NYC staring in March 2013. The show will chart Motown founder Berry Gordy's journey from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music mogul, launching the careers of music greats like Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and more.

I can only imagine the faboosh retro fashions they're working on for costume production. And that hair will surely be laid. Can't wait!

Grab a sneak peek here:

Anyone else hyped about this? Who's your favorite Motown artist?

LBS Exclusive: Tracee Ellis Ross Talks New Website, Self-Esteem & More

So those of you who know me, know that I consider Tracee Ellis Ross one of my biggest style & beauty inspirations. From her amazing head of natural hair to her impeccable taste in fashion, I’ve been a dedicated STAN since her “Joan” days on Girlfriends. You guys were there when I first met her this time last year at the Reed Between The Lines premiere party (yes, same night I met Kanye). And you were there when I gushed about seeing her again at the Optimum Hair Care event in August (and she remembered me! *squeals*)

So I considered it an immense honor that Tracee chose myself and a handful of other bloggers to hop on a call with her yesterday to discuss one of her proudest accomplishments to date - the launching of her very own website and online community TraceeEllisRoss.com! Tracee chit-chatted about some of her personal style icons, what we can expect to see on the site (from video content to guest appearances and inspiration posts), and what she hopes to accomplish in building her own community online. Get into our chat & be inspired:

What inspired you to create this new site?
I think this has been a lifetime journey if you want to know the truth. I think social media has really changed the definitions of what you can do with a website. Keep in mind that when Girlfriends was on the air, social media did not even exist! So up until recently, I had no real way of connecting to people who connected to [the characters]. So the last year I really spent growing in my relationship with social media. At first I was very uncomfortable with it. I come from a public family so I inherently am very private. But what I came to realize was that people were responding to alot of the same things that I respond to and that I was interested in. So that spawned the thought that it could become more than just me interacting with people via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. The desire to create a lifestyle website was there from the start. And my hope is that it eventually moves away from being just TraceeEllisRoss.com and it becomes a world and a tribe of other like-minded people.

Will you share educational pieces about natural hair on the site?
I am not an expert, just an individual who has had quite the hair journey. The overall theme of the site is just to use myself as a springboard. My hair is a huge part of my life so I can't say that it will be educational, but I will be sharing my journey and what works for me. My point always is to stress that there isn’t just one way to do it, or one way to treat your hair. And that’s the theme of how I will use that section of the site.

You're a fashion icon and you inspire many women with your style. Will you be incorporating more stories about empowerment through body image on your site?
Of course! I touched on that with my “A Culture Confused by Fake Boobs” story. I will say that I’m incredibly uncomfortable with having the word “icon” anywhere near my name. It makes me SO uncomfortable. Probably because I’m the offspring of a REAL icon and I don’t feel like I’m anywhere at that place in my life though I’m so humbled by that. Body image is huge for me. Acceptance of ourselves is so important. We are all stunning and beautiful because we are all children of God. So that message will always be a part of anything I do because it is a core belief of mine.

Where do you get visual inspiration from?
Oh God, it comes from anywhere! I could get style inspiration from a flower. Since I was young, I’ve always called my closet my "happy place". I moved to Paris when I was about 12 years old with my family. Then I went to boarding school in Switzerland and there are many things I got from living abroad. One of them being that I came to understand that I was a child of the world and not just the US. From an emotional standpoint, I really gained a connection to the “outer” of clothing and how it related to me in an "inner" way. This idea that clothing started as an armor and a way that I protected myself and now has become a way that I express myself. I truly find inspiration in many different places, but mostly it’s about how I feel, which is why I thinks style is truly from inner to outer.

Will you be including your celebrity friends like Kanye, or style expert besties like Chuck Amos on the site as well?
Eventually I hope to share all aspects of my world. I have alot of people in my world who you might not know but they are the shiznizzle, let me tell ya! My best friend - I want her to have a whole section! I think the people around me are way more exciting then I am. So yes, if Kanye wants to do that or if my best friend wants a section, I hope that this is a place for them to do so. And by the way, that's not only for people I know, but I hope that eventually I end up meeting some people I didn’t know before and being able to introduce them to my community though the website. That is the beauty to me, is that this is a way to connect and become a community - not just a way for me to be seen. So yes, that will happen!

Any favorite blogs or websites?
Recently I have been discovering a ton. Usually my interests online have to do with style and a bit of politics. I really love the Street Style photographers, like I just discovered Jak and Jil. But I will be honest, I’m not really a web surfer. That’s one of the reasons I love Twitter and Pinterest. I go there and they send me places, like an already edited selection of links. I really like Pinterest. It’s like magic!

Who are your personal style/beauty/inspiration icons?
The list could go on and on! I mean, obviously my mother has influenced my style. From a real practical sense because I take ALL her sh**! I mean I have been known to shove stuff down my shirt when she’s said “No you cannot take that.” I have left with bracelets in my boobs! (Laughs) My mom will see me and be like “That is so pretty, I have something like that!”. So obviously my Mom is one. Love Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Diana Vreeland, I love the 70’s as an era, Cher, Daphne Guiness - I love her boldness, Nina Simone, Kate Moss has style that makes me want to fall over, Cristy Turlington has incredibly beauty. And I LOVE noses. I love a strong nose. The kind of noses that make people uncomfortable and make them possibly want to get a nose job.

Love this woman! Intrigued? Mmm hmm I know you are. Check out Tracee’s website HERE! You also should be following her on Twitter @TraceeEllisRoss and keeping up with her on the Facebook.

Will you be following? I sure will!

Kickin' It: Optimum Miracle Oil Event With Tracee Ellis Ross

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a press preview of Optimum Salon Care's new product launch. They unveiled their newest product line called Miracle Oil, which has a blend of 6 natural oils like jojoba, argan, coconut, sunflower, apricot & avocado. The event took place at 404 NYC and their newest brand ambassador Tracee Ellis Ross (my fave!) was on hand, swearing by their new product. I adore her. Here's a snapshot of the event:

The Optimum Care Miracle Oil collection is a product line for both natural-haired and relaxed divas alike. The collection includes a 6-in-1 Miracle Elixir, $8.99 (which is Tracee's go-to product), a Hair Creme $5.99, and a Hair Moisturizer $5.99.

So I met my hair icon Ms. Tracee Ellis Ross once again! The Queen of perfect curls and red lips. Remember when I posted about meeting her for the first time at that "Reed Between The Lines" Premiere Party last October? (Same night I had my Chance Encounter With Kanye?) She remembered me! I almost died when she told me my face looked familiar. We're practically BFF now. Mmhmm yes, we are. Be jealous.

Tracee showed up with her dedicated natural hairstylist extraordinaire Chuck Amos. He's a riot!

Natural-hair blogger and expert Curly Nikki was a co-host. She looked amazing per usual, with a sophisticated high puff and a beautifully color-blocked ensemble. Love her!

Bumped into two of my favorite beauty gurus - Danielle of The Style & Beauty Doctor and Nicole Marie Melton, Beauty Editor at Essence.com.

This face is always beat! Love her red lip moment - gorgeous!

Lovelies Jessica Andrews of Glamazons Blog and Kela Walker of Kela's Kloset!

The ladies of the hour - Nikki Walton of Curly Nikki and Tracee Ellis Ross.

There were product demonstrations by the brand managers, on how the product sinks into the hair for optimum moisture without the "grease".

Tracee even did her own product demonstration! About the 6-in-1 Miracle Oil Elixir, Tracee stated "There's 6 different oils and like 7 different uses for this product. And it's only $8.99 guys. That's like $1.25 per use. You can't lose!"

These finger foods were everything. You guys know I like to eat. Sadly, I could only have like 2 of the things offered. Sigh, this Whole 30 plan is killing me! (That's another post altogether).

Overall it was an awesome event! Tracee asserted that she wouldn't endorse a product that she doesn't believe in. And I believe her. Hence, I'm planning to try these products out soon and I have a feeling they will be amazing.

Want to get your hands on some of your own? Check the Soft-Sheen Carson site for information about the product HERE and keep up with Optimum Hair Care on Facebook.

Will you be trying these out?

Tracee Ellis Ross Spills Her Beauty Secrets

If you're obsessed with Tracee Ellis Ross like I am, you'll have an appreciation for this amazing Face Time article that writer Tina Turnbow of the NYTimes recently did of Dr. Carla Reed aka Joan Clayton aka Lady Diana's daughter. I heart Tracee. If you didn't know, now you know. I met her at the premiere for her BET show Reed Between The Lines, and I fell in love. Anyway, here's what she had to spill about her makeup & hair regimen:

TT: Can you tell me about a few products that you and Carla like?
TER: Our favorite lipstick colors are Nars Funny Face and Schiap, and Nars Damned Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. For a natural lip, it’s all about Nars Blonde Venus. And from M.A.C, we like Ruby Woo and the Magenta lip pencil with a bit of lip balm. For mascara,Cover Girl Lash Blast in Very Black is the very best.

TT: How do you keep your hair so fabulous looking?
TER: When I’m not working, I spend a lot of time on my hair. When it’s time for my hair to get some rest, I either wear it in a ponytail, bun or my favorite “milkmaid” braid. My everyday essentials are Kim Kimble satin rubber bands, Bumble and Bumble Quenching Complex leave-in conditioner, Aestelance Hydrate leave-in conditioner. When slicking my hair into a clean pony, bun or braid, I mix a little Moroccanoil with water and smooth it on. The shampoo and conditioners I use depend on how I’m styling my hair — that list is reeeally extensive.

For more about her skincare and beauty regiment, get into the full NYTimes article here.

Also, check out the season finale of BET's Reed Between the Lines tonight at 10PM EST! Word on the street is, Anthony Anderson makes a guest appearance. Plus, I'm sure Tracee will be rocking some head-turning outfits for the finale epi.

Cover Girls: Tracee Ellis Ross for VIBE Vixen

One of my favorite style icons, Tracee Ellis Ross, looks absolutely stunning on the cover of VIBE Vixen. Doesn't she just exude edgy sophistication? Love her! In their 3rd Digital Edition, VIBE Vixen uncovers a few things about Tracee you might not know. Check out some of the interview snippets below:

VV: Is it difficult balancing your role as producer with starring in the show?
Ross: I wouldn’t say difficult, but it’s definitely makes for a long day. But it is the kind of full plate that I adore. I adore this kind of work and it’s very rewarding. The producer role very much plays into the kind of person I am. In the evolution of my career it is a really exciting step for me because I am the kind of creative person that has a real opinion about the kind of images that I want to portray and want in the public in general. So having a seat at the table with the many voices that is part of the collaborative art of television is really and exciting and wonderful for me.

VV: Let’s talk about your style. Before when we spoke, you mentioned that some of the pieces from Girlfriends would find their way into Carla’s wardrobe. What’s the inspiration? Do you work with designers or find things out and about?
Ross: It’s stuff that’s been found out and about. The way I went about Joan and Carla is I always ask myself who this woman is. Every once in a while people say Carla is so much like Joan, and I’m like, ‘People, Tracee plays both people.’ So what you’re seeing that’s the same between Carla and Joan is not Carla being like Joan, but it’s Tracee. Tracee was Joan and Tracee is Carla. It’s so funny people don’t understand that, it makes me laugh.

You can read the full article on VibeVixen.com. What do you guys think of Tracee's cover look? I'm gagging at the amazingness of her, per usual. Soundoff below!
