“I wanted to contribute to the wealth of information that’s out there,” says Mae about her reasons for joining the online natural community.Personally I'm super thankful to youtube vloggers like Mae and Kimmaytube, also spotlighted in this article, for taking the painstaking time to document their hair journeys. Also featured was uber popular natural hair blogger CurlyNikki. When I did my big chop, I literally frequented that site 5-7 times a day!
Not only have these women helped me immensely in learning how to properly care for my newly natural hair but they've encouraged countless others to make the switch and embrace their curls. Gotta love that. Check out the full NY Times Article HERE.

I was super excited when my coworker told me about this article. Great to see they're highlighting such an important and current issue in the amongst Black women.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because I big chopped in '06 and wore my natural hair for a year and a half. So by time 2010 rolls around and I'm considering BCing again, I'm surprised at how reluctant I am; for some reason this time I was more concerned about what people would think and if I was really ready to commit the time to caring my natural hair once again (which is why I had permed again my freshman year of college).
Needless to say, I built up the courage from watching all these wonderful women Youtubing about their hair journeys, including those mentioned in the article. One random night in January I grabbed my scissors at midnight on the dot and went to cutting. BEST decision I've made all year. =D
I love my natural hair and I've chopped mine twice now as well. It was down my back both times and I don't think I'll ever go back to relaxers after the tutorials that are available online from these amazing vloggers. Thanks for highlighting such an insightful article!
ReplyDeleteThat ended up being a really good article. Thanks for sharing.
