Cover Girls: Janelle Monae for Essence Magazine

My favorite ATLien songbird Janelle Monae graces the cover of Essence Magazine's May 2013 issue. In her feature, the flawless beauty discusses her decision to be unique, why she refuses to flaunt too much skin, and her definition of true beauty.

About her unique style:

“I made a decision to be unique [...] I like skirts and dresses just like everyone else, but I had a message I needed to put out there. It was up to me to show people and young girls there was another way.”

[I wanted to] “…redefine what it means to be sexy and what it means to be a woman. Showing my skin is not what makes me sexy [...] People don’t ask Jay-Z to take his shirt off when he rhymes.”

About what she considers beautiful:

“I love givers. I love when I find out that someone's given. I think people who give and give their time are some of the most beautiful people that I know.”

Take a look at the behind-the-scenes video over at Essence.com for more quotes and a sneak peek at her glam outfits.

What do you think about Janelle Monae's stance on not showing skin? Do you agree?

  1. I've been lucky to be graced by her presence once or twice and she's exactly the way she seems in interviews. She's very smooth, very professional and her skin and makeup is flawless.

I completely agree and I'm glad she's going the route she does style-wise. People need to see a variety of appeal and learn to recognize what appeal is.

What I love best is that she's not throwing shade at other female singers and people who do choose to reveal their bodies and push their sexuality through showing skin. She's not slut-shaming or trying to start with people. She's just going "this is my body, this is how I'm going to portray myself as a woman."

    1. Very well said and I agree - her comments were not shady at all. Gotta love an artist with class.

  2. Janelle is quite beautiful and the more I am learning about her, the more intriguing she is to me. I also feel women exude an heir of regality when they are comfortable in their own skin. They seem to have this wisdom about them that says, "I have arrived and I can't be bothered by anything petty or demeaning." But in the same breath coexisting with others that may not share their views. Plus, the more I mature, the more I'm realizing sexy exudes so much more than showing ones body. Its also the power you project in wisdom and confidence.
