She was rocking a brand new fro-hawk 'do (which was quite cute) and we got into asking her about her new style. You may recall that Lil' Mama recently posted a Twitpic of herself rocking out with a natural 'fro (see below), which garnered tons of attention when she put it up in May.
She chatted with us about the commentary she received after boldly posting the photo and she had quite alot to say about it.
"I posted the picture of my hair and people were like ‘Omg you look like a shocked slave!' I didn’t get one comment from a white person about my hair. All of them came from the sisters that had these bullsh** helmut weaves looking like a fake a** Nicki Minaj. They don’t know who they are. And the people they’re looking to for guidance don’t know who they are either, which sucks."
Aside from going all-natural with her hair, she's also decided recently to spring for natural nails. She no longer uses acrylic nails. A recent mishap actually led to an allergic reaction and what Lil' Mama believes was a message from God about being natural, in the form of a blister shaped like Africa. See pic below:
Watch our exclusive video where she discusses it all:
Thoughts on Lil' Mama's new do? Or her stance on being natural? Soundoff below!
Her hair don't look any worse than the next person & there are some over the top hair styles out there.
ReplyDeleteThe real "slaves" are women that have to purchase hair from people that do not invest any of that money in their community. Funny I was watching Chris Rock's "Good Hair" when I saw this.
ReplyDeleteYou have a good point, i read an article somewhere of a black man that was finally able to break into that market and become the supplier of hair instead of just buying it for clients. Took him 6 years to learn the culture language and establish contacts and his shop is in an urban area with money going back into the community. If more people took the time to dig deeper into businesses like this, we might get somewhere, i have nothing against weaves, or whatever but we are the biggest consumers of these hair products and barely any of us are reaping rewards or running the industry, this needs to change no matter what.
DeleteI would just like to comment on the authenticity of this article. I don't know who this Kisha woman is, but this is, in fact, NOT her interview. She simply recorded someone else's. The lack of professional integrity is astounding.
ReplyDeleteNafisa, I'm so sorry you feel that way. According to my contributor this interview was conducted under press conference format to a group of journalists (i.e no private room and therefore no outlet exclusivity). If you happen to know who has issue with this, please feel free to have them contact me at my email address listed above to chat about it. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!
DeleteYes, it was not a private interview. This specific interview was not conducted under press conference format as you can see via the background of the video.
DeleteThe issue lies in the manner of which the article was written which implied that she chatted directly with the writer and the video was an exclusive to your publication. This is also apparent in the way your video was shot, cutting out the actual interviewer who composed and directed the questions.
A mere correction of the wording would do.
To my knowledge, the editor of the interviewer's publication has already attempted to contact LoveBrownSugar and was, to say the least, 'snubbed'.
Yes, you can have them email me to discuss the issue further. I don't address content disputes via social media or in the comments section of my site. Thanks!
DeleteI understand, thank you for your prompt reply and professional manner.
DeleteThat Black natural look beautiful on Lil Mama
ReplyDeleteLil Mama is preaching in the beginning though. Who knows where she was coming from with the Africa comment, but do you boo.
ReplyDeleteAs for Nafisa, sounds like you're simply mad because you were beat to the punch? So you wanted the article to mention you along with everyone else that was shooting questions at her? And you're right, the interview wasn't conducted in the press room, but obviously you weren't the only now who had access to this mini interview.
I LOVE YOUR HAIR LIL MAMA. IT'S BEAUTIFUL, those ladies just wish they had your hair, that's why they speak like that. They are insulted by your Beautiful hair, cause it's not on their heads. When you hear negative comments like this, just SMILE, HOLD YOUR HEAD UP A LITTLE HIGHER, and say THANK YOU, AND SMILE again.
ReplyDeleteThen laugh inside because of their facial expressions.
Cause it's really a compliment, just from their point of view it's negative.
YOUR HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL AND SO ARE YOU.
I love the all natural look, I think thats the best she ever looked.
ReplyDeleteHot mess people said all this too her...I swear, most racism with black people are "us" ourselves...
Damn shame...
Great post. New follower ;)

She can't seem to catch a break, I've never been a big fan of Lil Mama, but people seem to be really hard of her, and it's getting annoying at this point, I've never had a white person say one thing about my hair, but admire it. Because they weren't used to it. Blacks are the ones who gave me issue, i'll never forget the day my very white boss, cussed my black co-worker out for commenting about my afro in the work place. It was shocking, upsetting, and funny all at the same time. She is right though, black chicks will come for you really quick about your natural hair, and even brothers, everybody still have this idea that natural hair should still look a certain way to be accepted! It looks like she took out some braids or something, but she is guilty of wearing weaves, and wigs as well.
ReplyDeletePlease I'd give anything to have my natural hair that thick! it's getting there, but people need to lay up off this woman.
i prefer lil mama with natural hair, she's naturally beautiful
ReplyDeleteActually natural things are always looking gorgeous than face so if a girl always using some heavy makeup for she is looking better than others, but a girl if their color is black she is also well than this because fake things are slowly destroyed all things and yes this natural hair is really very beautiful.
